You can search through the database of organizations concerning minority language communities in Europe.

To narrow down a search query, you can also indicate whether a search term or terms should appear in a specific metadata field.

Standard searches are for objects in which all the terms submitted appear in their metadata.

Two search methods

Two types of search are possible.
A 'simple search' using the search screen at the top left of the page.
An 'extended search' using the option in the menu on the right-hand side of the home page.

Simple search

A 'simple search' can be conducted using the search screen which appears at the top left of each page.

Extended search

An 'extended search' is conducted by selecting the 'SEARCH (extended)' option in the menu on the right-hand side of the DBFrysk.org home page.

Immediately under the field for the search term, you can choose which specific organization you wish to search.
In the default configuration, all options are activated.
You can also state whether a search term may appear in any metadata field such as abbreviation of the organization, translation name of the organization , address, place, emailaddress, Internetaddress and minority language concerned.

When you are searching in the database of organizations you can also use the filter option for type of organizations.

Combining search terms

Search terms can be combined using AND, OR, +, - , and NOT.
Examples:

  • Frisian AND education.
  • Results contain both 'Frisian' and 'education'.
  • Frisian OR culture.
  • Results contain either 'Frisian' or, 'culture' or both.
  • (Frisian OR education) AND 'culture'. Results contain either 'Frisian' or 'education' or both, and also 'culture'.
  • +Bilingual-education NOT 'minority language'.
  • Results must contain 'bilingual' and not contain 'education' and not the phrase 'minority language'.

Wildcards

You can search on terms that are specified only partially by using *, ?, ~.
Examples:

  • * matches one or more characters
  • Bilingual* will find words containing e.g. bilingual, bilingualism and bilingual education.
S*ation will find words containing e.g. 'standardization', 'socialization',
'segregation'.
  • Standardi?ation
  • ? matches one character, so this will find 'standardization' as well as 'standardisation'
  • ~ can be used for fuzzy searching
Proximity

Use the ~sign plus a number to specify that terms shoud be found close together.
Example:

  • 'bilingual education'~10
This will find names of organizations in which the words 'bilingual' and 'education' are at most 10 words apart (note: in 'bilingual education' the words would have to appear next to each other).
